Perkins-Tryon girls claim 66 Conference crown

PERKINS, Okla. — Points were hard to come by for the No. 2 Perkins-Tryon Lady Demons early in the 66 Conference championship against the Prague Lady Devils. P-T relied on its defense until the offense opened up in a 40-18 victory.

“Our defense carries us until we get going offensively,” coach Jerry Burnett said. “The first few shots for us were threes and that’s not what we normally do. The defense kept us in the game and we were able to get some inside buckets.”

The game was scoreless for more than two minutes. Prague briefly held a lead until seniors Jordan Gorham and McKenzie Stanford made baskets. The Lady Devils only scored four points in the first quarter and trailed by six.

“We didn’t allow any backdoor (cuts),” Burnett said. “They like to hit the high post on a backdoor cut. We didn’t allow that and were able to come out with a win.”

Stanford said the team wasn’t really scared.

“We knew our defense was really good Stanford said. “If we did what coach said we were going to be fine.”

The Lady Demons (18-0) continued their run in the second and led by double digits. Prague was held to just a free throw until it made a field goal with three minutes left. Perkins-Tryon led 22-7 at halftime.

Gorham who dominated in the semifinals was held in check, as she scored 10 points and had five rebounds. On most of her shots she had two people contesting.

Stanford stepped up and led the Lady Demons with 21 points, scoring 13 in the second half. In the third quarter, she hit two 3-pointers to put the Lady Demons ahead by 21.

“(Stanford) can shoot it,” Burnett said. “She just needs to play the game and let it come to her.”

The senior post gave her teammates credit.

“I need them to get me the ball,” Stanford said. “I’m a post and need other people to get me ball and they got it to me.”

The Lady Devils weren’t able to rally as the Lady Demons hit four straight 3-pointers to put the game out of reach.

“Coach talked to me at halftime and told me what I was doing wrong,” Stanford said. “I went out there and fixed it. I came up and hit those two (3-pointers).”

Burnett said it was a big win.

“We’re 18-0,” Burnett said. “We are happy and we want to finish the season strong and get ready for playoffs.”
