Playoffs continue to be postponed by inclement weather

STILLWATER, Okla. — Several area teams are having to wait and make an adjustments to their practice schedule as the threat of winter storms has postponed games.

Both Pawnee basketball teams are playing in the regional finals at Chisholm High school in Enid. Their games are postponed until Tuesday and could be postponed until Wednesday. Pawnee’s regional already started a day late because of bad weather last week. Pawnee girls coach Jeff Tatum said it has made preparations difficult.

“We have had three light practices because we are always having to anticipate whether we are playing,” Tatum said. “If we don’t play until Wednesday and get beat, we have to turn around and play Thursday.”

With the Lady Black Bears assurred of going to the area round, Tatum said he has had to prepare for several opponents.

“We’ve had to look at both Thomas Fay Custer and Wellston,” Tatum said. “If we play in the consolation and win Thursday, we’re looking at Ripley. I hope we can win and get a solid day to prepare for someone.”

Both Pawnee teams play Alva with the girls scheduled to tip at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. The winner of both games will play for the area championship Friday against Thomas-Fay Custer at the Chisholm Trail Expo. The loser will have to play in the area consolation round on Thursday.

The Perkins-Tryon boys and girls are also experiencing delays. Their regional also started on Friday. The Demons are playing Chisholm at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for the consolation championship with the winner advancing to the area tournament. The Lady Demons play Oklahoma Christian for the regional championship at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Coach Jerry Burnett also said the delays have made things difficult.

“We’ve had to change up our practice schedules, because we do different things on game days,” Burnett said. “It’s kind of throwing us off, but we have to be resilient and get through it.”

If the Lady Demons win, they won’t have to play in the area tournament until Friday. If they lose they will have to play Thursday.

Mulhall-Orlando’s area consolation championship game against Burlington is postponed until Wednesday with the time to be determined. The winner of that game advances to the state tournament, which would be the first for the Panthers. Coach Alex Beene said it has been a mess with all the delays but is confident in his team.

“Our guys are resilient,” Beene said. “They will be ready.”

If the Panthers win, they will face Arnett in the Class B state tournament at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.
