STILLWATER, Okla. —
To the editor:
State universities were created to be the avenue of middle class opportunity in America.
That is no longer true at the University of Oklahoma.
President David Boren and OU regents raise tuition and fees that bar deserving young people from higher education.
Their latest theft of opportunity for us poor folks, came when regents approved a 4.8 percent tuition hike.
Regents are appointed by governors who choose folks who are too rich to remember what it was like to be poor.
The only protection that students can have from these regent robbers is for the Legislature to reclaim their authority to set state college and university fees and tuitions.
Legislators facing re-election would not dare raise college tuition.
State colleges and universities should be open to every state resident with ability and ambition, irrespective of ability to pay.
The rich can send their children to private colleges and universities, but the poor cannot.
For state residents, OU and other state higher education institutions should be free because we, Okies, pay tax dollars to support them.
To charge us tuition and fees is double billing.
