STILLWATER, Okla. —
Robert J. McCracken
To the editor:
Again, Professor Atkinson paints a one-sided picture of a political issue. This time it’s presidential respect. In his world, only a Republican can be disrespectful to a president.
Or, perhaps he just can’t find any examples of disrespect coming from leftists.
I’ll help with that.
I have a few simple questions:
Where was the good professor when George W. Bush was in office?
Where are his remarks condemning Michael Moore for calling Bush a deserter, a thief and a liar?
And J. Malveau for calling him a terrorist?
Or Rosie O’Donnell for calling him a war criminal and a liar?
Or Streisland saying Bush reminded her of a Herman Goering quote?
Or Janeane Garofalo describing his presidency as the “43 Reich”?
How about George Cloony, “Bush is just dim?” (This is supposedly an unbiased news reporter).
And finally, if you haven’t had enough, there’s Al Gore saying, “He’s a moral coward.”
Bush was called everything form a dim wit (I wonder how other Harvard MBA’s took that) to a Nazi but I don’t remember Atkinson coming to his defense, even to tout constitutionally protected free speech.
I happen to agree with the professor that the office deserves respect and if one disagrees with the policies to the president, care should be taken in describing that disagreement.
It seems to me that President Obama has received rather mild treatment when compared with his predecessor.
But for the professor to criticize opponents of President Obama while letting Bush bashers off the hook seems to indicate a certain predisposition toward the presidents clear “progressive” agenda.
Hardly an unbiased academic view.
