STILLWATER, Okla. —
Letter to the editor:
There was a statement in the Saturday 3/29 article on SPS budget reductions that I found startling, to say the least. Actually, it's appalling. This is the statement:
“Since 2008, the state of Oklahoma has reduced state funding per student by 22 percent, which ranks last in the nation.”
This statement illustrates better than anything I've seen published anywhere why Oklahoma educators are so deeply concerned about public education. (I even thought I might have misunderstood the statement, so I looked it up on the Internet and found a great graphic that shows the dramatic truth: It's even WORSE than stated, being nearer 23 percent than 22 percent. You can find the chart at http://www.cbpp.org/cms /?fa=view&id=401 )
Everyone who cares about the future of our state should have a chance to see Oklahoma and Stillwater education in its true context as the worst of the worst nationally in state education funding. I hope you will do a follow-up story and start using the graphic depiction of this horrible stat to accompany every article you publish on local and state education funding in the future.
