Ventroliquist lends voice to programs

On Sunday, we had a fabulous Father’s Day program with about 60 dads and kids taking apart recycled machines from the city’s Convenience Collection Center and making some rather fascinating creations.

Next week’s programs start on June 24, with ventriloquist Gary Owen at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Gary’s amazing voice earned him his own radio show, voice appearances on PBS and a guest spot on “Good Morning America.” Kids are going to love his adorable critters Zippo, Pepto Bizmol and Sparky the Dyno Dog.

On June 25, young adults going into 6-12 grades get to try out their quick wit and acting skills during “Mega Mash-up Comedy Improv” at 2 p.m. OK Improv is visiting to show teens the art of improvisation. We are really looking forward to the troupe and the teens performing raps on the fly. No worries if you are shy and don’t want to perform — just sit back and watch the hilarity.

June 26, Summer Cinema at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. features a rated G Disney animated film. Join a brilliant young inventor named Lewis as he sets off on a time-traveling journey to find the family he never knew. In the world of 2037, hip-hoppin’ frogs and dogs that wear glasses are as common as talking dinosaurs. In an amazing twist, Lewis discovers that the fate of the future rests in his hands, but he can’t save it alone. He meets the wacky Robinson family, who help him learn to keep moving forward and never stop believing in himself.

Last, we have just a few more spaces open for adults who want to attend the June 28, Hypertufa Workshop at Multi Arts Center. The free program starts at 1:30 p.m. You’ll learn how to make lightweight flower pots and other decorative garden objects. The program is limited to 20 adults, so sign up soon on the link at our webpage.

When baling hay in the “olden days,” if the feeder couldn’t put a nice size gob for a flake of hay, he’d lose his job. The horses providing the power walked in a circle.

Summer@ Your Library has come to an end. We recorded our highest registration and attendance. We want to say a big thank you to all of our sponsors, but especially to the Friends of the Library who fund most of the programming.

The topic of the legal drinking age is an ongoing debate among American politician and citizens. Among the countries that set a legal drinking age, 18 is the most common. Along with Mongolia, Indonesia, Palau and several states in India and Egypt, the United States is an outlier with a minimum purchase age of 21.

The presence of the fledglings is rare, but there are still several juvenile birds around if one looks for them, like the American Robin and the Northern Mockingbird. I have seen nesting Eastern Bluebirds over the past couple of days, so we’re not over the hump of raising young yet.

This isn’t the first time and more than likely it won’t be the last. I’m putting myself back on the wagon as I’ve eaten my way through the last pile of “fat” clothes I have stashed in my closet.

Quercus is the Latin name for oak. It is a quirky name; some believe its roots came from the Celtic word for “fine tree.” Anyone familiar with oaks knows they are indeed fine trees.
