Life at Boomer Lake 07-13-14

Boomer Lake teeming with wildlife

The lake is losing a little water to evaporation, but it is not a problem now. It makes it easier for me to get around the Northern Reaches, for that holds a world all its own. When I was there Wednesday morning, there were several things that just struck me in the heart, and when I finally left, I was nodding my head and telling myself that we just have to preserve what we have.

Therefore, I will work even harder to get the word out on how to help save the environment, and teach everyone that I can how to do the simplest of things that will make a difference. The easiest thing to do is recycle.

Here’s an interesting sight for you that not many people have been able to see. Since we are fortunate enough to have our own heron rookery with a number of these beautiful Great Blue Herons, we get to see fabulous and rare things like this heron sunning himself. He is so relaxed, he allows his wings to simply part and stretch out at times. I call this particular shot “Arms Wide.”

Also observed at the Reaches, was a Carolina Chickadee and a Great Egret. Upon my return to civilization, I heard a couple of Red-bellied Woodpeckers, a Northern Flicker, a Baltimore Oriole and a couple of Eastern Bluebirds. Sometimes when you’re lucky, and the Turkey Vultures are out, not only will one see them riding the thermals, but they also feed on fish carrion in this quiet area.

A few days ago, just before the sun re-emerged from a bank of clouds, there was a massive shape on the bank of the Southern Cove. Just waiting for Old Sol to rear up, I was greeted by a beaver feeding. It was priceless to see those little paws grasping the greenery and it showed what we are privy to see what goes on in the country. Even though we live in suburbia, we still are able to enjoy the country within the arms of Boomer Lake. Join the many people that walk and run the lake each day, and you’ll see what I mean when you glance over just to see the scene that I just described.

Baby birds are still everywhere. One of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher youngsters finally made an appearance today in its nest. What always enchants me are those little tufts of downy feathers atop the head. The parents are being run ragged for food, but those little ones grow so quickly and will be out of the nest in about a week.

If you get the opportunity to visit our beautiful Boomer Lake, please stop by. Once you have been there once or twice, I guarantee that you’ll be looking for some of the beautiful sights and sounds of nature while you are here, and that will be enough to keep you coming back for more. Keep your eyes on the ground and your head in the clouds. Happy birding!
