Come celebrate National Public Garden Day

What better way is there to celebrate National Public Gardens Day than spending time at one of the best public gardens in Oklahoma? In conjunction with the American Public Gardens Association, The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University will celebrate National Public Gardens Day Friday.

We’re always looking forward to celebrations and activities which will draw people out to TBG at OSU. Everyone associated with TBG is so proud of all we have done to make this a premier garden in Oklahoma.

TBG will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for National Public Gardens Day and we encourage the public to come out and take tours of the garden. Tours will take place from 4-5 p.m. Our knowledgeable TBG Ambassadors and staff will be on hand, along with the entire crew from Oklahoma Gardening, to lead the tours and answer your gardening questions. We have such great Ambassadors at TBG and they just love to share their gardening knowledge with others.

With National Public Gardens Day being Friday, we hit the daily double with activities because that date just happens to be the same day as our second concert in our Concerts in the Garden Series. The concert is slated from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs, a picnic supper and plan to spend the evening in a tranquil setting listening to some wonderfully entertaining jazz music.

The American Public Gardens Association created National Public Gardens Day in 2009 to help raise awareness of public gardens and the critical role they play in today’s environment, educational system and cultural world. Each year, more than 500 botanic gardens, arboreta, educational gardens, farm gardens, historical landscapes, zoos, museum gardens and other APGA members have observed this special occasion with various activities.

Public gardens all around the country offer fun activities for families, providing a low-cost, entertaining and beautiful community outing, as well as promoting important resources, education and research on environmental stewardship and conservation.

What began a number of years ago between Rain Bird Corp., a leading manufacturer and provider of irrigation products and services, and the nonprofit American Public Gardens Association , to release water conservation public announcements, officially became National Public Gardens Day in 2009. The two organizations decided to take their efforts to another level in order to raise awareness on the conservation and educational efforts of the nation’s public gardens.

Kimberly Toscano is assistant extension specialist and host of the OETA television program Oklahoma Gardening, which airs at 11 a.m. Saturdays and 3:30 p.m. Sundays, and assistant director of The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University.
