STILLWATER, Okla. —
Payne County voters approved Proposition 2 on Tuesday night, a measure that will allow alcoholic beverages to be sold at restaurants and bars on Sundays.
With all 31 precincts reporting, 61.5 percent of the voters approved the proposition and 38.5 percent voted against it.
Proponents of the proposition believe permitting the sale of wine and strong beer on Sundays allows restaurants and bars in the county to compete with other establishments in other cities that allow Sunday liquor sales.
The pastor of a Stillwater church said that he is not opposed to people having a drink on Sundays, but “getting drunk concerns me any day of the week,” said John Dickey, pastor at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Those in favor of the proposition say it will bring increased revenue and additional sales tax to the county.
“Awesome. This is long overdue,” said Adam Jameson, manager of a downtown restaurant in Stillwater.
