Oklahoma State Wind Ensemble preps for fall concert at Seretean Center

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble is preparing to hold its second concert of the fall semester at 8 p.m. Nov. 15  in the Seretean Center for the Performing Art’s Concert Hall.

Conductor Joseph Missal said the group has been rehearsing twice a week for six weeks.

“I hope it’s a balanced recipe of a program,” he said. “It opens with a brass fanfare by (Paul) Dukas, which one of my graduate students is conducting.”

The piece, titled “La Peri,” will be conducted by Andrew Anderson.

In addition, the 51-member group of undergraduate and graduate students will perform “William Byrd Suite” by Gordon Jacob, “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner and a new piece written for the U.S. Marine Band titled “Passage.” The piece is by Scott Lindroth.

“It was premiered in 2010 and it’s a fantastic piece,” Missal said. “Lots of colors and lots of virtuosity in the faster sections of the piece.”

The concert will conclude with “Whip and Spur” by Thomas Allen and “Circus Bee” by Henry Fillmore. Both pieces are circus marches, according to a press release from OSU.

“A lot of this music that we played on this concert and the one we played in October, we will take this music toward our performance in Japan in May,” Missal said.

The group will visit Hamamatsu City in May 2013 to play the Japan Band Clinic. This is their second time receiving the honor; the first was in 2006.

Missal said he hopes the concert hall will be nearly full for the upcoming performance. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens. All proceeds benefit the OSU Department of Music.

“We want to do the very best literature and we want to do it with the highest artistic standards,” Missal said.
