STILLWATER, Okla. —
Anna Myers, an award-winning young adult book author, will discuss the writer’s voice from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Stillwater Public Library Room 214, 1107 S. Duck.
Young adult readers, upper elementary students, educators of all levels and interested members of the community are invited to hear from the author, a creator of historical and contemporary fiction, said Stillwater Librarian Lynda Reynolds.
“Stories were always important in our family,” said Myers. “I never tired of hearing the stories about what went on in the Oklahoma hills where my parents grew up as neighbors. Going to the library on Saturdays was a big event at our house, and my older siblings frequently read aloud to me. It was that love of stories, I believe, that made me decide early on that I wanted to be a writer.”
At a state writing conference last spring, Judith Sexton of the Stillwater Writer’s Group approached Myers about coming to speak to the local organization.
“She is very accessible and we are delighted to have a writer of her stature come to Stillwater,” Sexton said.
Myers plans to dress in character for the presentation, demonstrating a few of her stories to the audience. Her main focus will be stressing the importance of having a strong voice because that’s what makes a work more distinguishable than another.
“Each work has its own voice,” Myers said, which “gives the feeling of the piece or the heart of it.”
It took seven years to sell her first book but after it was published in 1992, she found her voice and started developing a new book nearly every year. Historical fiction is her main genre because she was taught as a child, “if you don’t know where you have been, you can’t know where you are going.”
“I like to think my books help kids know where we have been,” Myers said. “Books are geared toward two levels — the middle grades three to seven and young adult grades six through nine.”
Myers has written 19 books and received the Oklahoma Center for the Book’s Lifetime Achievement Award in the spring of 2012.
