Stillwater could expand curbside recycling next summer

STILLWATER, Okla. — The city of Stillwater could have citywide curbside recycling sometime next summer, Director of Waste Management and Fleet David Higgins said.

The goal is have the program up and running by September at the latest, Higgins said. It could start as early as June, pending approval from city council.

A pilot curbside recycling program which started Aug. 1 will continue until the citywide program is rolled out, he said. The pilot program has exceeded its goals.

The area for the pilot program is south of West Sixth Avenue to the city limits (roughly 32nd Ave.) between Husband Street and Sangre Ridge Road, Higgins said. This section of Stillwater was good for a pilot program because it is a microcosm of the city, with rental property, old and new houses, he said.

At the Nov. 5 Stillwater City Council meeting, Higgins told councilor the results of the pilot project and sought their authorization to plan citywide implementation.

Higgins said the program met costs, participation rates and diversion goals.

Recycling will save the city money, Higgins said.

“Three or four years from know when this thing is maturing, that’s when your really going to see the savings on this one,” he said.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
