Cool Classics Summer Concert Series continues Friday with viola, harp duo

STILLWATER, Okla. — Cool Classics Summer Concert Series is set to showcase the second act of its sixth season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Sheerar Center Auditorium.

Appassionata Viola Harp Duo will perform classical music as well as versions of songs by Elton John, Michael Jackson and Guns N’ Roses.

“It’s certainly not an evening at a hard rock concert, but it’s a refreshing look at this type of music and shows its diversity,” said Director Ammie Bryant. “It’s different from anything that we’ve had in the past.”

Assistant Director Charles Barraclough said the concert will draw a wide range of ages.

“We try to keep it a family atmosphere so people with children can bring them, older people can come and we all just meld together and listen to the concerts,” Barraclough said.

The first act of the concert series was July 6 with Tulsa’s Trio Aleszky.

“It was a great kickoff to the series,” Barraclough said. “I think we had a great turnout of people and the concert itself was fantastic.”

The series will continue with Friday’s concert and future performers such as Students of Stillwater, July 20; and a piano performance by OSU graduate Amy Cottingham,  July 27.

“The Cool Classics was created to fill a void culturally in Stillwater during the summer months,” Barraclough said. “OSU is out of session, so there are less things of this nature for people to enjoy.”

Bryant said Stillwater is a unique position as a university town. She said there is a great amount of local talent that the Sheerar hopes to feature.

“The fact that we’ve had consistently a large audience over the past five years illustrates that the community of Stillwater wants a summer concert series like Cool Classics,” Barraclough said.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
