Splash pad idea taking root in Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater’s Southern Woods Park is the likely home of a splash pad, but the fundraising campaign is just ramping up.

Stillwater Community Endowment Fund board member Paige Wacker said the nonprofit organization has raised approximately $10,000 for the splash pad, but needs $340,000 more.

The brochure for the Splashing Stillwater Splash Pad project states: “A splash pad is a zero-depth aquatic play area” and that it “combines the sensation of different water movements-flowing, misting and jetting for an unequaled play adventure.”

The plan involves building at the eastern portion of Southern Woods Park, close to 12th and Knoblock. The grassy area next to the playground would be used and the basketball court on the east side of the park would replaced. The courts on the west side would remain.

A final design, Wacker said, hasn’t been chosen because the project is in the fundraising phase. Some Oklahoma State University engineering students plan to submit design ideas for the splash pad.

Stillwater resident George Knox, 53, who lives near the park, said he thought the splash pad was a good idea.

“I think it’d be a nice addition to the neighborhood,” Knox said. “I’d probably use it, I went to the Tulsa Fair last night, I’m still a kid at 53.”

Stillwater resident Mary Barbour, 25, was walking her dog at the Stillwaggin’ Dog Park in Southern Woods Park. She said the splash pad would be good for people with small children, but was concerned about wasting water. People in the United States take water for granted.

Foundation secretary Lynda Reynolds said there will be buttons which start the flow of water and timers that shut the water off. The splash pad would most likely be open from sunrise to dusk.

The Communities Foundation of Oklahoma, the Stillwater group’s parent organization, manages the foundation’s money.    

The foundation was formed in 2005 to provide a way for community members to donate money for worthy causes, according to information provided by Reynolds. The foundation has provided grants to The Storehouse Food Pantry, Payne County Youth Services, the Saville Center and the Stillwater Public Library to establish a nonprofit organization resource center for grant seekers.
