Yale hosts food drive beginning Friday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The third-annual Feed Our Community Thanksgiving food drive begins Friday in Yale and runs until two days before the holiday.

Payne County residents can bring turkeys, turkey pans, canned stuffing and other items that make up a Thanksgiving dinner to Yale Police Department headquarters, 209 N. Main St. in Yale.

Yale Police Chief Philip Keeling said cash donations are welcome. He explained that often some items are lacking and police purchase more to round out the dinners. Checks should be made out to the Yale Police Reserves.

“Turkeys are the big thing, what we really need,” Keeling said. Last year 36 families were delivered a dinner and Keeling said the department plans to deliver more than 50 this year.

The event was started three years ago when officers began to see working families struggling with rising food costs.

“They can’t afford a Thanksgiving because they are paying their electric bill, their car payment,” Keeling said. The families are chosen from community suggestions, observations or word of mouth, Keeling said.

“They are really appreciative,” Keeling said of the families who receive the groceries. “There are tears.”

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
