Payne County crews ready for more winter weather

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater could see as much as 6 inches of snow through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow should stop falling sometime Monday evening, said Vivek Mahale, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norman. Four to 6 inches of snow is forecast for Stillwater. No ice was expected.

Roads were expected to be slushy during the 5 o'clock commute, but roads could be frozen over Tuesday morning, Mahale said.

"Anything on the ground will refreeze because it's so cold," he said.

The low tonight will be around 17 with a high of 34 Tuesday.

Rocky Blasier, road foreman for Payne County district one that includes the Cushing area, said eight grader trucks and one sand truck were already plowing snow from asphalt roads and laying sand this morning. The trucks were sent out at 9:30 a.m. The trucks may have to cover the roads again later after more snow falls, but “we’re going at it as hard as we can go at it to try and make it passable for people,” Blasier said.

The graders will tackle gravel and dirt roads after paved roads. Blasier described gravel and dirt roads as “slushy, messy” Monday morning.

Jesse Jones, road foreman for Payne County district three that includes the Perkins area, said eight snow graders would be sent out to remove snow once it stopped falling. One sand truck will also be sent to add traction to intersections and hills. Jones said work trucks sent out to haul gravel were called in due to slick road conditions.
