Theater set to open its 62nd season in Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. — The value of lifelong friendships is at the center of the next community theater production in Stillwater.

“I think what this play demonstrates is that over the course of a very long time how important your friends are,” said Dawn Wilson, who plays Sheree in “The Dixie Swim Club,” which opens Thursday as Town & Gown Theatre opens its 62nd season in Stillwater.

Tickets go on sale Monday. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors during the Sunday matinee performance.

The show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

The cast also includes Bonnie Cain-Wood as Lexie, Ty Reitan as Dinah, Tracy Freeman as Vernadette and Charissa Prchal as Jeri Neal.

The play tells the story of five southern women whose friendships began years ago on their college swim team. Each year, the women unite for a long summer weekend at the same beach cottage to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives.

The play focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of 33 years.

“I think people are really going to be able to recognize people in their own personal lives that they see in these characters,” said director Paul Weber. “What I really like about this cast is that there are five distinctly different personalities. And each of them brings a different comic flair to their characters.”

Approximately 20 women auditioned for the five roles in the play. Each of the actors have stage experience at Town & Gown, but Weber said a few backstage personnel are new to the theater.

Weber said the rehearsal schedule has been excellerated.

“This has been a little shorter than usual,” he said. “We went from first read to opening night in just over four weeks.”
