Three Payne County officials receive the oath of office Wednesday

STILLWATER, Okla. — Tuesday marked the start of the terms for three Payne County officials.

Sheriff R.B. Hauf, District 2 County Commissioner Chris Reding and County Clerk Glenna Craig received the oath of office from District Judge Phillip Corley.

More than 60 people attended the ceremony, including county officials, friends and family.

Hauf, who ran unopposed in the November general election, thanked supporters and joked that he was glad there wasn’t an election this time around.

Reding said he wanted to thank God for the possibility to serve the county. He also thanked his family and friends.

“I appreciate the opportunity and look forward to the opportunity to serve,” Reding said.

Craig said she wanted to reaffirm her pledge to the county and let residents know she will have an open-door policy.

“We hit the ground running at 8 a.m. this morning,” Craig said.

Craig said she had come in for four hours on New Year’s Day and was in the office at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday.

She said she was going to have a staff meeting Wednesday to discuss her expectations for the office and get input from staff.

Three employees retired at the end of 2012 and three people stayed on from the previous office holder. Craig said she has hired three new people, including Cathy Chapman, her first deputy, and a new purchasing agent who will be trained by Ruth Stover, who worked as a purchasing agent for the clerk’s office for 16 years.

“I appreciate the staff that retired and the staff that remained, and we’re looking forward to a great administration,” Craig said.

Reding said he has hired an administrative assistant, Tammy Mathis, who is authorized to take his place if needed.

He said he was preparing an agenda Wednesday afternoon for the next commissioner meeting on Monday.

Hauf said he would like to focus on crime prevention and maintaining high visibility with the public. He said the county still has a highway safety grant and officers would be enforcing the safety corridors.

More county inmates could be used in the spring for outdoor cleanup, he said.
