Band to play free concert in Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater residents will be treated to a special performance from one of the U.S. Air Force Academy Band’s ensembles.

Blue Steel, the commercial, popular music ensemble of the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, will perform at the Stillwater Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25. Doors open at 7 p.m. Community Center Manager Stephanie Gudgel said they are excited to have the group perform.

“This is typically a very popular program so we expect a full house,” she said. “We encourage people to get here by 7 o’clock to get a good seat.”

Gudgel said the event is free and does not require any tickets.

According to the U.S. Air Force Academy Band website, Blue Steel is comprised of “full-time, active duty bandsmen (who) are committed to enhancing community relations, supporting the recruiting mission of the United States Air Force Academy and instilling the Air Force core values of Integrity, Service and Excellence in our nation’s youth.”

The website states the group is high energy and performs multiple genres.

“This is going to be more like a rock band,” Gudgel said.

Members of Blue Steel include group leader and vocalist Tech. Sgt. Julie A. Bradley, guitarist Master Sgt. Stephen L. Brannen, bass player Sr. Airman Colin R. Trusedell, drummer Tech. Sgt. Tim Blake and audio engineer Tech. Sgt. Paul McWhirter III.

“In the past, we have presented Shades of Blue, which is their jazz ensemble and some of the other groups,” Gudgel said. “So, we’re real excited to have them here.”
