Skating rink at Oklahoma State University opens Tuesday

STILLWATER, Okla. — People looking to perfect their Salchow or triple Lutz will get their opportunity as the Oklahoma State Student Union and Student Union Activities Board sponsor a skating rink Tuesday.

Coordinator of Student Union Programs Larry Putman said this is the first time they have have a skating rink, to his knowledge.

"We just wanted to offer a good welcome back to school type activity, something unique and since the city of Stillwater didn't have one this year we wanted to see if it was feasible and we were lucky enough to find a vendor who could come and construct something on campus at a price we could afford," Putman said.

The rink, located at the Student Union Amphitheater, will be 30 by 50 feet. Admission is free and skates, sized 8 to adult 13, will be provided on a first come, first serve basis.

"We anticipate tomorrow to be very popular," he said.

He said anticipates 500 people a day.

Putman said depending on the turnout, he may have to limit each person's time on the ice to give everyone a chance to skate. However, the rink will be open rain or shine from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The vendor will begin to set up the rink at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

"The floor is four by eight sections and they kind of put it together like puzzle pieces and then they spray the coating over the top of it to allow for the ice skating to happen," Putman said. "It's artificial ice."

Putman reminds those attending that parking on campus is limited and the Student Union garage may be the best choice. Signed waivers will also be required at the rink. Any children under 18 will require an adult's signature before skating.

Putman said he will have to assess if the two groups will bring the rink back next year.

"If not this, something similar or things of that nature," he said. "If it's really popular, we will have to see if it's feasible to bring back every year."
