Payne County Youth Services wins United Way's Basore Award

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater United Way recognized volunteers, board members and gave out a special award at its recent annual meeting at the ConocoPhillips Oklahoma State University Alumni Center.

The Bennett Basore Award was given to Payne County Youth Services this year.

“We choose one of our United Way partner agencies each year and there are actually several criteria,” said Carter. “It’s awarded by our allocations committee.”

Criteria includes mission-related services provided and involvement of the agency’s board and volunteers and progress on long-range planning.

“Of course, we are very honored by that,” said Executive Director of Payne County Youth Services Janet Fultz. “It’s the second time in four years to receive that award.”

Fultz said they are honored to be partnered with the Stillwater United Way.

“We have done a lot of work in the last four or five years on really focusing the direction of the agency and the work of our boards,” she said.

Payne County Youth Services will hold a fundraiser, “An Evening to Remember,” at the OSU Alumni Center at 6 p.m. Saturday.

A table of 10 to the event is $500. One ticket is $50.

United Way Executive Director Sheri Carter said five new board members — Jace Dawson, Lynn Hermanson, Bob Palmer, Clem Ward and Lisa Eden — were recognized.

Carter said 60 to 70 people attended, including all partner agencies. In addition to recognizing incoming and outgoing board members, the United Way also recognized the achievement of meeting its $850,000 goal for the year.

“It’s such a great event because it’s one of the rare times that all of our United Way agencies are together and all our United Way volunteers are together and I think it’s so important for all of them to know who each other are,” Carter said.
