Stillwater superintendent wants grassroots fundraising effort for athletic complex

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater Public Schools Superintendent Ann Caine said plans are being made on the development of an athletic complex at Cimarron Plaza.

“This is our newest project,” said Caine, who spoke at the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce's monthly luncheon Friday afternoon. “We’ve been working on this for the last 18 months.”

Caine said the school district’s next bond election could be in four years, and she would like to keep costs of the athletic complex construction off of the bond.

Caine said she would prefer “a grassroots” fundraising effort instead of subjecting the Cimarron Plaza construction to a super majority vote in a bond election.

The district purchased 35 acres north of Pioneer Stadium on Boomer Road last April with the purpose of creating an athletic complex that would include softball and baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, locker rooms and coaches offices, a weightlifting room and meeting rooms. The complex would also include a wellness center that would feature recreation, competition and therapeutic pools.

In an hourlong address on the state of Stillwater schools to a capacity crowd at Meditations, Caine said despite a shortfall in state funding for education, the Stillwater district has not had to lay off any of the 814 teachers and staff on the payroll.

On the issue of school safety, Caine said schools need to have a “common sense” approach and not be over-reactive.

Caine is opposed to metal detectors in schools and the hiring of additional school safety officers.

“Mental health is the bigger issue,” Caine said.
