Stillwater Medical Center Board to discuss health care at meeting

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater Medical Center’s Board of Trustees will discuss the implications of the Affordable Care Act at its 8:30 a.m. Friday meeting, said hospital Chief Executive Officer Jerry Moeller.

The meeting will be at Cimarron Hotel and Suites, 315 N. Husband.

The hospital must start measuring efficiency by 2015 to comply with the Act. Moeller said he wasn’t sure how that would be done.

The Board will discuss value-based purchasing, which is based on Medicare regulations that reward efficiency and penalize inefficiency and following established medical procedures, he said.

Patient re-admission for the same condition within 30 days is another factor used to evaluate value-based purchasing, he said.

The Board will also have a da Vinci Robotic Surgery discussion, Moeller said. While the idea is in the early stages, Moeller said robotic surgery would involve a surgeon sitting at a console operating a robot which would make incisions.

Moeller said having a robot do surgeries is less invasive than traditional open surgery with larger incisions.

The Board will receive an update about ongoing construction on the hospital’s south campus, which is being built on the south side of West 12th Avenue between Blakely and Washington streets.

Moeller said the Board will also hear about an idea for establishing a Joint Replacement Center of Excellence. He said the center would have all joint replacement patients in one wing so they could work out and do rehabilitation exercises together. He said when it comes to joint replacement, controlling pain is also important.

“If you control pain properly, you can get people up early and avoid complications,” Moeller said.
