Payne County Budget Board directs departments to evaluate salary needs

STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County Budget Board unanimously agreed to have each county department evaluate its salary needs and bring back new figures for employees who have worked up to two years Tuesday.

Five percent raises for county employees began Oct. 1, but there has been some disagreement about salaries for employees who have worked for the county less than two years.

County Sheriff R.B. Hauf said he wanted to be able to offer competitive wages to possible new hires based on experience or he wouldn’t be able to hire good deputies.

“They’re gonna laugh and go elsewhere,” Hauf said.

Deputy Sheriff Kevin Woodward, who is not on the Budget Board, said all county employees deserve a 5 percent raise but not everybody got one.

County Commissioner Gloria Hesser said the county gave the 5 percent raise because it had funds available.

She said she would need to see a dollar amount on changing the pay structure for employees who have worked less than two years.

County Assessor James Cowan said he had four people in his office who have been employed for less than two years. He said he had built a buffer into the budget to pay salary increases.

County Clerk Linda Hatfield suggested “revising the whole plan and going from there.”

County Treasurer Bonita Stadler said each county office should evaluate its salary needs for employees who have worked less than two years and bring back new figures for the Dec. 10 Payne County Budget Board meeting.
