Wings of Hope's mission is to meet the needs of families in crisis

STILLWATER, Okla. — Wings of Hope Family Crisis Services is one of 23 agencies supported by the Stillwater United Way in its yearly campaign.

“We are a family crisis center serving families that experience domestic violence or sexual assault,” said Senior Counselor Brenda Gill.

Gill said Wings of Hope sheltered seven women and five children in October. The center also received 585 phone calls, 170 of which were crisis calls.

“When a family comes in we have nine bedrooms, so when a family comes in they may stay for up to two months getting on their feet,” she said. “The services we provide are everything from advocacy and support in filing a protective order to assisting in developing a resume, helping get services with other agencies; we do counseling. We do everything from provide clothing and food to licensed counseling with individuals in crisis.”

She said Wings of Hope has a sexual assault response team that visits hospitals to be with victims of rape.

The Stillwater United Way continues to strive for its goal of $850,000 this year. So far, $475,000 has been raised.

“We could not do what we do without the support of the community, and the United Way has been an integral part of that for a long time,” Gill said. “When community members give to the United Way, that money goes directly into social support services throughout the community and meets the needs of families that are in crisis situations that individually we can’t help, but when we join with the United Way as a community, we can meet the needs in a very powerful way.”

If the goal is not met, there will be individuals that will go unserved, Gill said.
