STILLWATER, Okla. —
Iron workers installed an 18-foot, 300-pound beam on the top of what will be a 40-foot clock tower Monday during a “topping out” ceremony at the Highland Park Elementary School, 400 S. Drury.
Attached to the beam was an American flag, a Christmas tree and the names of hundreds of Highland Park students, who signed their names to the beam when it was transported by Lambert Construction Co., to the school’s current location last week.
“That’s the last piece of steel that will be erected on this building,” said John Anders, the grounds and operations director for the school district. “And it’s at the highest elevation at this building site.”
Anders said the beam will be left unpainted so that the student’s names will remain on the beam.
“Their names will be up there until the ink washes away,” Anders said.
Several members of the Stillwater Board of Education attended the event, along with district and school administrators.
“This is a benchmark day in the construction,” said Assistant Superintendent Jim Ryan.
Ryan said construction is 40 percent complete at Highland Park. He said the school will be ready for students at the start of the 2013-14 school year.
He said construction at the new Will Rogers Elementary School is approximately three weeks behind Highland Park.
