STILLWATER, Okla. —
The tradition of helping struggling families during the holiday season continues this year with Operation Christmas.
The project, conducted by the Junior Service League, opens up a makeshift store filled with toys and other items. This year’s store is located near Trinity Fellowship church.
“Where we have the store is different every year because the site is donated,” said Junior Service League Chair of Operation Christmas Sandy Scott. “We were just so fortunate this year that Trinity Fellowship, they were just gracious enough to let us use their lake house.”
Scott said they have a variety of items.
“Each family gets three toys per child and they will get a $10 toy, a $20 toy and a $30 toy for each of their children. They get socks and underwear and then we also have bikes available if their child is in need of a bike.”
The bikes were donated by the Red Dirt Pedalers, a Stillwater organization.
“We have about 25 bikes that were donated by them and that’s always a really big hit,” Scott said.
Scott said they attempt to give out only a few bikes each day.
“We have three days of shopping, so we try to allocate them out because some people don’t know about signing up for this project and it’s really not fair for the last shopper to come in and not have the same benefits as the first shopper,” Scott said.
The Junior Service League teams with Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency for the project. The group places signs around the community informing those who may need the program how to apply through COCAA.
“They have to provide proof of income, ages; so, there is a process,” she said.
Shopper’s identities are confidential.
The store opened at 9 a.m.
