County commissioner wants bills paid more quickly

STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County needs to work out the bugs in its purchasing process, Payne County Commission Chairman Chris Reding said at Monday’s meeting.

A few weeks ago, Reding expressed concern about late payments of county bills. Monday, he said an investigation revealed the county’s billing process is at fault, not any single employee.

After several late payments, the County Commission figured out what happened and a commissioner apologized.

Reding said one instance was a bill that is required to be paid in three parts. Lenell Brown, Reding’s first deputy, made two of the payments but forgot the third.

He said another instance of a late payment was when two invoices were stuck together. Even though incidents happened, he said it’s more than one person making mistakes.

“It appears to be more of a systemic problem,” Reding said. “More than an individual problem.”
