Program is a foster care support group

STILLWATER, Okla. — Leanne Chaffin is coordinating a Child SHARE Co-op to support Circle of Care foster families.

 1.    What is Child S.H.A.R.E.?

The United Methodist Circle of Care program, Child S.H.A.R.E. (Shelter Homes: A Rescue Effort) is a program to recruit, train and certify foster families, and then provide local support to these families.

 2.    What are the goals of the program?

A Child SHARE Co-op is available in Stillwater to provide local support to Child SHARE foster families. The goal of the Co-op is to encourage more people in the area to become Child SHARE foster families, and then be there to provide encouragement and support as they welcome children into their homes. When a child is going to be placed with one of the Circle of Care foster families, items they need will be gathered and delivered to the family. When the child leaves that home, equipment will be returned to the Co-op so another foster family can use it. Each child will receive a welcome basket with an age appropriate Bible, a new blanket, a photo album, toothbrush and toothpaste. These items will always belong to the children and will go with them when they leave the foster home. The Co-op will be open for foster families to select clothes, shoes and make exchanges for seasonal items. As the service develops, there may be other activities such as monthly support groups or parties.

 3.    What are ways to help?

Consider being a foster parent or help locate those who have a calling to help the 10,000 Oklahoma children in need of a home. Provide donations for the Co-op from newborn through high school students including clothing, coats, shoes, new underwear and socks. Donations should be good quality and only items that would be good enough for your own children to wear. Equipment is needed such as car seats, cribs, high chairs and toddler beds with all items meeting safety guidelines. Diapers and wipes are also needed. Donations may be dropped off at the First United Methodist Church at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Duck Street.  Financial gifts are accepted and may be mailed to Child SHARE Co-op, FUMC, 400 West Seventh Avenue, Stillwater, OK  74074.
