Oklahoma State football player charged with driving under suspension

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State University football team’s starting defensive tackle Calvin Barnett has been charged with driving under suspension in Payne County District Court.

Barnett, 21, was charged with the misdemeanor Tuesday.

The charge stems from an Oct. 17 traffic accident at the intersection of McElroy Road and Bellis Street. Oklahoma State University police records show Barnett’s car was struck from the rear by a car driven by Kevin Clark, 18, of Muskogee. Barnett’s car was stopped in traffic when the wreck occurred.

The accident happened after OSU’s Homecoming victory over Iowa State University. The game started at 11 a.m.

During the crash investigation, OSU police officers discovered Barnett’s driver’s license was suspended.

Court records show Barnett has been charged with driving under suspension twice previously this year.

He was charged May 1 for driving under suspension, no insurance, speeding and failure to register a car within 30 days of purchase. The charges stem from an April 30 traffic stop by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

An additional charge of driving under suspension was filed that day as well. It stems from an April 14 traffic stop.

Those cases have been continued until 10:30 a.m. Nov. 19.

Barnett has started all seven games at defensive tackle for the Cowboys. He is ninth on OSU’s tackle list, and has recorded 17 tackles this season.

No. 24 Oklahoma State travels to Manhattan, Kan., Saturday to face No. 2 Kansas State. The game will start at 7 p.m. It will be televised on ABC.

Barnett’s status for the game is unknown. He was listed as No. 1 on the depth chart when it was released Sunday.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
