Oklahoma State Symphony Orchestra plans second concert of year

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State University Symphony Orchestra will hold its second concert of the year in the concert hall of the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. Nov. 7.

Director of Orchestral Studies Douglas Droste said the event will celebrate the progress that the orchestra has made over the last nine years. Droste was the recipient of this year’s First Lady of OSU — Distinguished Professor of Music Award. The OSU Symphony Orchestra has been invited to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, in January 2013.

“That’s the first time we have toured out of state and the first national conference that we’ve been invited to perform at,” he said.

As a celebration, the event will feature multiple works, including the world premiere of Roger Cichy’s “Hat’s Off!”

Cichy, a family friend, wrote the piece for Droste’s father for his 75th birthday last year. Droste’s father was a professor of music at Ohio State University for 25 years.

“The composer will be here,” he said. “It is a world premiere and my parents are also flying in.”

Droste will perform Mozart’s “Violin Concerto in G Major (I. Allegro)” as the soloist on violin and leading the orchestra. The evening will wrap up with Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” which Droste said has never been performed in Stillwater.

“It’s considered pretty standard, but for the young concert goer it may be quite a shock,” he said.

Droste said he hopes for a great turnout.

“We were very close to capacity on our first concert back in September,” he said.

For the first time concert goer or the experienced listener, the concert will bring something to everyone.

“The first two pieces will be very enjoyable and accessible and the last piece will stretch you beyond your imagination,” Droste said.
