School board seats up for election

STILLWATER, Okla. — Want to have a governing impact in your local school district?

Several public schools in Payne County have seats up for election on local school boards, including Seat No. 4 on the Stillwater Board of Education.

People interested in the five-year volunteer position should file for the seat at the Payne County Election Board, located at the County Administration Building, 315 W. 6th Ave. The filing period will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2-4. The election will be held in February.

Seat No. 4, which represents the northeast portion of the school district, is held by Eric Gudgel, who has been seated on the board since 2011. Gudgel is running for re-election.

Candidates must meet several criteria to be eligible. The individual must have resided within the school district for at least six months prior to the first day of the filing period and be a registered voter at an address located within the geographic boundaries of the district for six months before the filing period.

Candidates cannot have been convicted of or have pled guilty of or contest to a felony, and must have been awarded a high school diploma or certificate of high school equivalency.

An incumbent school board member must have completed continuing education prior to the filing date for re-election for the same board seat. The requirement is nine hours during a full three-year term, 12 hours during a full four-year term and 15 hours during a five-year term.

Candidates must not be related within the second degree by blood or marriage to a current school district employee or member of the board of education.

Several other school board seats are up for grabs, including positions at Glencoe, Yale, Perkins-Tryon, Agra, Carney and Wellston.

Meridian Technology Center has Seat No. 1 up for election. The position is held by Joe Williams, who will seek re-election.
