Stillwater Art Guild hosting photography demonstration at Sheerar Center

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Art Guild is hosting Jan Lee, a Photographic Society of America officer, at 7 p.m. Monday in the Sheerar Center Auditorium. First-time visitors to the Stillwater Art Guild may attend free. There is a $5 charge for returning guests.

Lee’s primary love in photography is black and white prints. She will use a computer and digital projector in the demonstration, opening her workspace to process several photos. In the program, a variety of subjects will be transposed to a monochrome image.

“Working on photography as an art form is different than just snapping pictures,” she said.

Lee has owned her own camera since kindergarten. As a child, Lee took many art classes but felt she lacked talent. When she grew older and used photography as her medium, she applied what she had learned in art classes to her work.

“When digital photography took off, I started ‘developing’ my images on the computer,” she said. All of those childhood art classes helped her to paint with light to create better images.

“My photography helps me to see my world better,” she said.

Lee earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. She worked for the U.S. Air Force and retired with more than 30 years of service in 2008. Photography is something she enjoys with her husband, Wally.

Since 1978 she has been an active member of the Oklahoma Camera Club and is the first person to be elected to a third term in the club’s 81 years of existence.

Some tricks she has learned along the way are using the best equipment you can afford, with the most important tool being a tripod, she believes. Devices that snap pictures are everywhere but serious photographers need to invest in their craft with study and peer reviews, too.

“If your pictures are sharp, it doesn’t matter what photo processing software you have,” she said.

Her accolades include PSA 2010 Photographic Proficiency Distinction, the 2011 Associate Honor for service to PSA and the 2012 photographic excellence distinction.

Lee has also served numerous times as the general chairman of the Oklahoma International Exhibition of Photography and seven years as the chairman for the pictorial print division portion of the exhibition shown at the annual PSA Conference.
