Q5: Get prepared at emergency fair Saturday at Boomer Lake

STILLWATER, Okla. — Michael Zanfardino with the city of Stillwater talks more about the Stillwater Emergency Preparedness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the west side of Boomer Lake Park, weather permitting. The event will feature drawings held every half hour. Children’s IDs will be issued by police. There will be free snacks and a fun run at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for children 5 to 12 years old. There will be emergency kit information and discounted items available for purchase.

1 What is the Emergency Preparedness Fair?

The most common thing I heard from those who had been affected by a disaster is “I wasn’t prepared.” The Emergency Preparedness Fair is designed to hopefully help residents learn ways of preparing themselves from everything from a power or water outage, all the way to a large disaster like what happened in May of last year in Oklahoma.

2 What do you hope the community gets from attending?

We have agencies from all over the state who have offered their time to offer their knowledge and services to teach us ways of preparing ourselves, our families and even our communities on what we can do before an event happens.

3 Does the emergency fair have something to offer everyone?

With severe weather always threatening Oklahoma, everyone who attends should hopefully be able to learn tips on ways they can prepare themselves and what they can do in the unfortunate event that something does occur. The event is open for all ages with something for everyone.

4 How many agencies are attending?

At last count, we had 25 agencies who have agreed to participate in the event. That number may change though as we have additional agencies who have expressed interest in attending. We are continually updating our Facebook page with the latest participants at www.facebook.com/areyoupreparedstw.

5 What is one reason why people should attend?

Peace of mind. While you can’t prepare for every type of disaster possible, by following some basic readiness steps hopefully everyone will have peace of mind knowing they can be prepared.
