Morrison teacher named to statewide school safety panel

STILLWATER, Okla. — A Morrison Public Schools science teacher has been named to a statewide panel to address safety in schools.

Tammy Will was selected to join school administrators, law enforcement representatives, mental health professionals and parents on the Oklahoma Commission on School Security.

Commission members will meet for the first time at the Oklahoma State Capitol, Room 419-C, at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

Will, who has been teaching for nine years, teaches seventh- and eighth-grade science at Morrison. She is the only teacher on the commission.

“It might very well be that I’m there as a resource for reality,” Will said.

Meeting agendas will include speaker testimony and discussion on the various factors related to school security, including public safety, mental health, training, engineering and local control.

The commission plans to provide suggestions and legislative recommendations regarding school security for the 2013 legislative session, which begins Feb. 4.

Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb will chair the commission.

“Partnering with legislative leaders to create the Oklahoma Commission on School Security was a much-needed, proactive decision,” said Lamb.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
