Stillwater High School group set to perform free concert

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater High School Wind Ensemble will give residents a preview of its upcoming Oklahoma Music Educator’s Association State Convention performance.

The ensemble will perform 7 p.m. Monday at the Stillwater Performing Arts Center. The concert is free.

Conductor Kevin Zamborsky said the group will play music they plan to play at the OMEA conference Friday. He said they are one of a small handful of groups performing at the convention. Many of the students will also be taking part in the All-State Band and Orchestra Contest around the same time.

“It’s a busy weekend for a lot of our kids, but I think that’s definitely something they are looking forward to,” he said.

The OMEA State Convention will be held at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Friday with a $15 entry fee. However, those who wish to see the performance for free can do so Monday in Stillwater.

The wind ensemble will perform “Valdres” by Johannes Hanssen, a Norwegian composer, “October” by Eric Whitacre and “Transcendent Journey” by film composer and orchestrator Rossano Galante.

“I think they’re excited,” Zamborsky said.

He said being a part of the OMEA State Convention is something that Stillwater shoots for on a regular basis.

This will be the third time the group will go to OMEA under Zamborsky. He said being chosen is a big accomplishment.

“We’re very proud in how much the ensemble has grown and developed and is now getting recognized for their achievements by the state,” Zamborsky said.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
