STILLWATER, Okla. —
Water rationing is not in Stillwater’s future despite a two-year drought in the Midwest, Stillwater Utilities Authority Director Dan Blankenship said.
The city’s municipal water supply, Kaw Reservoir, is 99.6 percent full, Blankenship said Monday night.
The reservoir, created by construction of a $111 million dam on the Arkansas River, was completed in 1976. It is located near Ponca City and is the seventh largest lake by surface area in Oklahoma.
“We are in a favorable position. ... We are fortunate that the Kaw Reservoir is served by the Arkansas River Water Basin. It has obviously not been hit by the drought as hard,” Blankenship said.
In January, Norman instituted water restrictions because of low water levels at Lake Thunderbird. That lake supplies water to Midwest City and Del City.
Oklahoma City instituted water restrictions last month as well. The city’s water supply lakes are half full. Lake Hefner is at its lowest level since the 1970s, OKC Utilities Director Marsha Slaughter said.
Stillwater officials don’t foresee any water shortages this year, Blankenship said.
“We don’t anticipate any type of conservation measure needing to be enacted for water supply purposes,” he said.
