SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: Administrator: Students are first priority

STILLWATER, Okla. — Name: Gay Washington

Job title: Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services

Length of service: Two years in current position

You recently were selected as Assistant Superintendent/Central Office Administrator of the Year. How does it feel to have been chosen?

I was very surprised. I was very honored. I see that as a reflection of a true collaboration amongst all administrators and teachers that we have.

All of the Stillwater Public Schools faculty and staff have a responsibility to the students. What is your responsibility as assistant superintendent?

My first responsibility is to make sure we always put our kids first. Once we do that and we are all in line about what direction we need to go, it’s my job to see that our teachers have the materials and training and the principals have the support system they need from us. We’re kind of behind the scenes. My position could be distant, but we work at that every day to make sure it’s about the students.

How else have you served Stillwater schools?

There’s so many. Before this, I was director of special education. I was the principal at Richmond Elementary. Before that I was the special education teacher at Stillwater High School. I started in 1978.
