Deer causes fatal accident west of Stillwater on Thursday

STILLWATER, Okla. — One Stillwater resident is dead and another is injured after a vehicle they were traveling in crashed while trying to avoid a deer on State Highway 51.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday  Clara Drew, 60, of Stillwater was driving seven miles west of Stillwater when she swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway. The car departed the roadway, swerved back and departed the other side of the road, struck a ditch and rolled twice.

Passenger Weldon Drew, 77, of Stillwater was transported to Stillwater Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition with head, arm and trunk internal injuries. He died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday in the hospital.

The driver was treated and released from Stillwater Medical Center for head and trunk internal injuries.

Investigating troopers attributed the wreck to the deer in the road.
