Stillwater decked out for the holidays

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater is starting to look festive. Holiday decorations line Main Street and Sixth Avenue.

The city’s Christmas parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in downtown Stillwater.

Stillwater utility linemen started installing holiday banners and lights earlier this week. It usually takes three days to get everything up.

Stillwater Media and Public Relations Director Sherry Fletcher said West Sixth Avenue will have 61 light displays and 60 banners from Jardot Road west to south Western Road.

The decorations were bought by the city in fiscal year 2005-2006, she said.

Business Improvement District No. 1 Coordinator Amy Jo Frazier said the city’s electric utility department coordinates with her office to plan the decorations.

Frazier said the lights and decorations will begin to come down after Jan. 1.

Bryan Venable, Stillwater electric utility distribution supervisor, said his department will be assisting Frazier with hanging the banners. He said the lights will mostly be wrapped around street light poles.

Frazier said the holiday banners are stored in a box in the administration building. She said she wasn’t sure how old the banners were, but they are inspected each year and the worn ones are thrown out.

“For the most part, they’re in pretty good shape,” Frazier said.

Frazier said the city hired Christmas Decor by Rainmaker Sprinkler Co., of Ponca City to decorate the street lamps along Main Street with garland and wreaths. City workers install the banners downtown.
