QUICK 5: The ‘gift’ of hospice fills needs of families

STILLWATER, Okla. — Valerie Bloodgood has worked at the Judith Karman Hospice since 2009.

1. What is the role of the Judith Karman Hospice?

We are gifted with the opportunity to care for terminally ill patients.

2. What are some of the services you provide?

We provide nursing care for the patient, but we also provide spiritual, physical and emotional care for the patient and the families. We provide volunteers for family members that need respite or caregiver support.

3. When does hospice provide care?

In the final six months of life. We have some people that die before then, and we have some people that have been in our services for two years. We offer bereavement services that follow family members for 13 months after the death of a patient.

4. Why does hospice hold a 5K run each year?

Because we are a nonprofit, we look for opportunities to hold fundraisers. It’s a fundraiser for Judith Karman Hospice and it is in memory, or honor of, Mary Jo Sohrwide, a nurse and community leader.

5. How can the public help the hospice?

They can help at our Karman Korner, which is our resale store that helps provide funds. Volunteering is a fantastic way to help, and if they are able to financially donate to Judith Karman Hospice, we accept financial donations as well.
