Oklahoma State pitcher arrested after wreck

STILLWATER, Okla. — A driver who told police he’s a baseball player was arrested after a wreck early Tuesday and charged with aggravated driving under the influence.

Kyle John Ottoson, 21, had a blood alcohol content of .19 when Stillwater police administered a breathalyzer test, Capt. Randy Dickerson said.

Ottoson is a pitcher on the Oklahoma State University baseball team. While police administered a breathalyzer test, Ottoson “stated his baseball coach was going to kill him,” according to a police report.

Police were investigating a reported burglary on North Husband Street when they heard a crash just after midnight, the report says. An officer went to the 400 block of North Husband Street and saw a sport utility vehicle backing up, Dickerson said. The SUV had hit an unoccupied SUV parked in the road, Dickerson said.

“At one point, they think he went airborne over a small bridge and crashed into a car in the area,” Dickerson said.

According to the report, the parked SUV was sideways in the road, and the driver who hit it told police it was in the middle of the road.

No one was hurt, Dickerson said.

Police gave the driver a field sobriety test and then took him to the police department for a breathalyzer test. The man’s blood alcohol content was .19, Dickerson said.

State’s attorneys can file a misdemeanor charge of aggravated driving under the influence for a driver who has a blood alcohol content of .15 or more.

A woman in the car was issued a citation for “allowing another person to drive their vehicle contrary to law,” Dickerson said. Police did not arrest her, he said.

Wade McWhorter, a spokesman with the Office of Athletic Media Relations at OSU, said officials are “gathering all the facts and will determine a proper course of action if necessary.”

Ottoson appeared in Payne County District Court Tuesday and was released on personal recognizance bond. Special District Judge Michael Stano ordered Ottoson to return to court May 15 with an attorney.

Ottoson is a left-handed pitcher and is usually the starting pitcher for Saturday games. He has the second lowest earned-run average among OSU starters.

Major League Baseball drafted Ottoson in each of the past four drafts.
