Lake McMurtry group hopes to land new fishing ideas

STILLWATER, Okla. — Representatives of Lake McMurtry are seeking input from fisherman.

A meeting, titled “Ask the Fishermen,” is slated for 9 a.m. Saturday on the west side of Lake McMurtry.

Friends of Lake McMurtry member Mary Cash said they hope to get input from fishermen.

“Fishing is such an important part of the lake and the fishermen are more independent and we’d like to get their ideas of what they would like to see at the lake,” she said.

A questionnaire to solicit ideas is available at Cooper’s Bicycle Center. Cash said they have received several good ideas already, including specific fish breed tournaments such as walleye and crappie and family and/or children’s fishing tournaments.

“We’ve talked to the bicycle people and the runners, but we don’t feel like we have enough from the fishermen,” she said.

Free doughnuts, bagels, orange juice and coffee will be available at the meeting.

Since the organizational structure of the lake has changed and is being operated through Lake McMurtry Friends, Stillwater Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Cristy Morrison said the direction has taken on quality of life issues.

Morrison said she has always wanted to see fishing tournaments at Lake McMurtry and is glad to be working with different entities to bring more awareness to what the lake offers.

“It’s also a great avenue with which to bring visitors into the community,” she said.

Morrison encourages visitors to the lake.

“It’s had a total facelift,” she said. “I’m very impressed with the improvements.”
