Man accused of murder to appear in court

STILLWATER, Okla. — A man accused of beating someone to death is scheduled to appear in Payne County court for a pretrial hearing Friday at 9 a.m..

Christopher Dawes, 27, of Stillwater is charged with first-degree murder and domestic assault and battery by strangulation. He is being held without bond in the county Jail. The court has entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.

Court records show Dawes is accused of beating Jeremy Sutherland to death after a night of drinking in October. A medical examiner’s report determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma. Dawes is also accused of attacking his girlfriend the same night.

Dawes’ counsel has argued the murder was a crime of passion and is trying to get the charge reduced.
