Local group has high hopes with the release of its fifth album slated Dec. 4

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater’s own No Justice is preparing to release its fifth album, “America’s Son,” on Dec. 4.

Lead singer Steve Rice said this effort is a return to an early sound for the band.

“This record is very similar to our first record in the fact that we’re getting back to our roots and original focus with the band,” Rice said.

He said the aim was to write about relationships, growing up and to “not overdo it” and keep the focus on the melodies.

The first single, “Shot in the Dark,” was well received, he said.

“A lot of people didn’t know what to expect because the last record was more on the rock side than the country side,” Rice said.

He said “Shot in the Dark” was a way to let fans know the direction the band was heading.

“We really had our fans in mind with this record because a lot of times we play dance halls and places where people typically dance,” Rice said.

Rice said the album, with eight tracks, is filled with sing-along songs.

Among the cuts are two re-recorded versions of previous songs by the band, “Red Dress” and “Don’t Walk Away.”

“I think just like anything songs kind of grow with the band over time,” Rice said. “That’s kind of how ‘Don’t Walk Away’ came to be.”

Rice said that as new musicians came into the band, the song evolved.

With “Red Dress,” the new version is slower and features country artist Rebecca Lynn Howard.

“Whenever we cut that in the studio, we cut out half of the chorus and it’s always been a missing piece that I’ve wanted to add back in,” Rice said.

He said the talented singer is part of three songs on the new album.

“She did the last record with us too and my voice is a really hard voice to match up a harmony vocal with and her’s just fit perfectly,” he said.

The front cover of the album features an oak barrel with Stillwater, OK, on the front.

“I’m just really proud of where we’re from and what we’re a part of here,” he said.

The group is set to make strides this year. Rice said the group may be touring with well-known national country acts.

“It’s going to be a good year,” he said. “Probably one of the most productive years that we’ve had.”

The group is set to perform prior to the Bedlam game on Campus Corner in Norman Saturday.
