Downtown events to inspire holiday spirit in Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. — Chris Salmon Plaza will have a Christmas tree and an impressive display of lights synched to music, said Amy Jo Frazier, business improvement district coordinator for downtown Stillwater.

The lights are expected to be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in Chris Salmon Plaza, near Seventh Avenue and Main Street.

At 7 p.m., the city will hold its Downtown Christmas Parade, which will feature a free sleigh ride in a horse-drawn carriage with Santa, said Frazier.

Frazier said TV 31 of Stilwater will have a live remote from the location at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 11.

Carriage rides will be available Dec. 13, 15, 20 and 22. Santa Claus will make a visit Dec. 13, Frazier said.

Frazier said Stillwater merchants could pay to have a visit from Santa Claus at their business.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, a locally owned gourmet chocolate factory downtown, will pay $500 to the BID district for a visit from Santa.

Janna Boyer, owner of the shop, said she thought it was worth it to have a live television remote and have Santa visit her store. It’s her first time to have Santa visit her store.

“We try to make this store a fun place for people for all ages,” Boyer said. “Hopefully, it’ll bring more people in this year.”

Boyer had some concern about the possibility of cold weather turning some people away.

“It’ll be a fun day and a new day and hopefully the weather will be good,” Boyer said.

Frazier said Rodney Wilson, parks and recreation coordinator, and others at Stilwater Parks and Recreation and the city’s Information Technology department have been instrumental helping bring her concepts to life.

The day before Thanksgiving, Wilson and Frazier worked on synching a computer light program to flash lights in time with the music for “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.”

Frazier said Stillwater Designs donated four outdoor speakers and an amplifier to the project.

The IT department helped set up an FM transmitter to broadcast the Christmas music, which will be played at the plaza and on the radio.

Frazier said the BID district provided her with a $5,500 expense account for the light show.

Other entities, like Stillwater Designs and parks and recreation, also have contributed to the holiday display, Frazier said.
