Grading slated to be finished at medical center in February

STILLWATER, Okla. — Grading for the Stillwater Medical Center South Campus should be complete in February, hospital Assistant Administrator Steven Taylor said.

Grader operators are raising the site above the flood plan, Taylor said. Sherwood Construction has a $1.9 milllion contract for site preparation.

The support services building is the only building in the planning stages now for the site, Taylor said.

“That whole campus is based on need,” Taylor said.

He said the main hospital building is landlocked, so the south campus is designed for expansion. In 15 or 20 years, the hospital will need more buildings, Taylor said.

Rees Associates architecture firm of Oklahoma City is designing the building, Taylor said.

The building hasn’t yet gone out for bidding, but construction is set to start in May, he said.

SMC third-floor medical surgery unit is in Phase 3 of a four-phase construction project.

Heritage Construction of Stillwater holds the $1.97 million construction contract for the surgery unit.

Phase 3 is set to be done in February and Phase 4 should be done in May, Taylor said.

Phase 2 had some delays which concerned Taylor and hospital CEO Jerry Moeller, according to a Sept. 25 report to the Board of Trustees.

According to the report, Heritage officials agreed to an addendum to the contract that put into effect a reasonable schedule of completion along with late penalties of $2,000 a day if it doesn’t reach those targets.

Taylor said the company had not been charged any late penalties.

The surgery unit will have 32 patient rooms, Taylor said. The project is an upgrade of existing facilities, including new windows and new heating and cooling units for all rooms.

The redesign also aims to make patient rooms more accommodating for visitors and more accessible for patients and physicians.
