PERKINS, Okla. —
Hundreds flocked to downtown Perkins Thursday night for dancing, music, fun and bright lights.
Carolers sang as people strolled the streets to look at an assortment of local crafts, food and art.
The annual Old Fashioned Country Christmas, which has been held for more than 20 years, featured a Christmas parade with a variety of entries — like Perkins Mayor Bob Johnson on a brightly lit bicycle sporting a wreath.
“I like it all, everybody getting together as a community ... it’s great to be a part of that,” Johnson said, next to his festive bicycle. “It looks like we’ve got a real good night going”
Dance groups, trumpet players and singing children entertained crowds as they waited for the parade to start.
The parade featured motorcycles, horses and the Perkins-Tryon High School marching band.
Christian Motorcycle Association rider Steve Axtell was dressed as Santa Claus but also sported a leather vest.
“We’re here to celebrate Jesus,” Axtel said.
He said the association has been in Perkins four years. Members help with charities, events, hand out Bibles. Axtel added he enjoys meeting everybody.
“It has gotten better and better every year,” said Betty Hannack.
She has made it a family tradition to attend the festivities every year. She said the way residents come together to put the event on is like something out of a “Christmas story.”
