Oklahoma State University to flush water system this weekend

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State University Utilities will be conducting a routine flush of its water distribution system Friday through Sunday.

Manager Steve Armstrong said the process is done once a year for maintenance.

“Basically, while we filter out almost all the dirt and stuff rom the lake water, there’s always a really fine amount that works its way into the system,” he said.

This will not make the water dangerous, Armstrong said. However, during the procedure he warned that water may appear discolored or have a different taste. Water pressure may be affected, too.

According to an OSU press release, last summer “saw a large increase in algae growth for all surface water sources like Lake Carl Blackwell, contributing to higher than normal trihalomethane levels in OSU’s water this year.”

Trihalomethanes are by-products of disinfection.

“Periodically, it’s needed to go in there and flush all that stuff out and make sure there’s not build up on the pipes,” Armstrong said.

The work will begin on one end of the campus and work its way along to every fire hydrant, flushing water from each for 15 to 20 minutes. Any abnormalities in the hydrants are recorded and fixed  as well. After the entire flush is completed, the distribution system will be rid of the contaminates and water treatment methods will be changed.
