Stillwater Humane Society ready for 'Walk-n-Wag"

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater residents and canine companions will take a stroll for a cause at the Humane Society of Stillwater’s 2013 Walk-n-Wag April 27.

Director Jackie Ross-Guerrero said this event is vital to the nonprofit’s success.

“Walk and Wag is one of our major fundraisers and without fundraisers we can’t rescue and take care of the animals we have in the shelter,” said Ross-Guerrero.

The Walk-n-Wag is one of two major events for the group. The other is a golf tournament held in October.

Event coordinator Cydney Foster said all funding for the Humane Society of Stillwater comes from donors. They do not receive government funding or United Way funds.

The Walk-n-Wag will include a one-mile walk with pets. However, if someone without a pet wishes to participate, they may do so.

“We hope to see between 200 and 300 people,” Foster said. “We have a lot of animal-related businesses and businesses who value pets that come out and set up booths, so there are a lot of resources for pet owners.”

Participants are asked to collect pledges and donations from friends and family. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society.

Foster said the goal is to raise $10,000. The registration fee to participate is $25, which includes a T-shirt.

“It’s an event for animal lovers and just the community all together,” Ross-Guerrero said. “We’re going to have bouncy houses and food. You get to see so many different dogs.”

Foster said an added benefit to the event is to change people’s perceptions of animal shelters.

“When people hear about animal shelters, I think some people ... had an avoidant behavior about it because I thought it would be so sad,” Foster said. “But our animals are well taken care of and we’re adoption guaranteed so that means animals can stay in our shelter as long as they need to to find their perfect home.”

Businesses can still become sponsors in three different sponsorship levels if they contact the Humane Society by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m. the day of the event. The walk begins at 11 a.m.
